Common DIY Plumbing Mistakes

If you fancy sorting out DIY problems yourself at home, you may find that some of them are a little more challenging than others. This is more than true of plumbing than any other job. This is because plumbing is such a delicate job requiring dedication, years of training and experience. Today we’re talking about some of the most common plumbing DIY mistakes - and if you recognise some of them you’ll know how important it is to know when to hand the job over to a qualified plumber to fix.

No plumbing tools.

Sometimes you might look at something and confidently declare that you can get the job done. However, just because it may look easy doesn’t mean it is. Some of your most rusted gadgets, cutlery and vague looking implements are utilised to help repair whatever it is you think the problem is and it can often end in disaster.

Suddenly, just as something really bad happens, you realise when you should have left it to the professional plumbers. If you insist on repairing it yourself, then do make sure that you have the correct tools for the job.

Have you ever used a chemical drain cleaner?

It’s not necessarily the best solution because clearing the drain manually is often the best way to deal with the problem. The trouble is that chemical drain cleaners can be extremely toxic and expensive and they can cause permanent damage to the system as well as corroding your pipes. If you insist on using a solution try baking soda and vinegar, the combination of these two work well together. Flush with hot water after you’re done.

Proper taping methods need to be followed.

Never use inappropriate taping methods or wrap a thread tape backwards. There are specific ways of handling taping e.g. PTFE thread has to be threaded clockwise for it to work properly. Also, a PTFE tape should never be placed on the thread of a compression fitting, this can cause a leak.

Always replace the chemical inhibitor.

If you’ve drained a heating system you need to replace the chemical inhibitor after. This is a chemical liquid that protects the central heating system, it helps it to work efficiently, and keep it in good working condition for much longer. Sludge can build up in your heating system over time and this can stop it from working properly. If you need this done we recommend hiring an experienced heating engineer.

A chemical inhibitor will break down this build-up of sludge and protect it from building up again sooner than expected, giving you longer use of your central heating system before you need to drain it again. That’s why it’s important to replace it once you’re finished.

Over-tightening Pipes

Tightening the fittings and pipes so badly that it causes other problems such as splitting and slipping off other important equipment. If you tighten your pipes too enthusiastically, then this could cause problems that could end up damaging them permanently.
